Should the ATP Nip Nick in the Bud?
By Laura Sonday
Nick Kyrgios is good for the game of tennis...sometimes.
The stereotype of tennis is a country club, polite manners, and often serious competition. Nick Kyrgios has challenged all of that in his career.
I understand the annoyance that people feel when watching him on and off-court. The underhand serves, the lackadaisical approach to matches and practices, and the direct feuds he creates with other tour players.
But what annoys people the most? If he trained harder, he could be a top 10 player easily. He’s athletic, he’s fast, and he has great strokes. He’s even made reference to his own workout and practice schedule, saying he shouldn’t be as good as he is.
I admire the fact that he is the first and last one to criticize himself, but mostly that he doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not.
The serious press conferences, strict diets and practice schedules are not his cup of tea. He’s a professional athlete, yes, but he has fun with his job.
He’s recently spoken out about Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and that has gotten past no tennis fan.
After hitting Rafael Nadal with a ball purposefully during their Wimbledon match this year, Kyrgios was asked why he didn’t apologize. His response? “I mean the dude has got how many slams, how much money in the bank account? I think he can take ball to the chest, bro. I’m not going to apologize to him at all”.
His ongoing dislike for Novak Djokovic is in the press once again after Kyrgios crossed out “Novak” on an Atlanta fan’s shirt. He has said that he feels Novak tries to hard to be liked.
In their two meetings on court, Kyrgios is 2-0 against Djokovic, and he uses that in his statements as well. He says if a player can’t beat me [Kyrgios] than he can never be the best player in the world.
Nick Kyrgios is good for the game of tennis. Yes, he might annoy you, but when you saw headlines about him hitting Nadal in the chest did you watch? I bet you did. When you saw the headline about the fan in Atlanta and the Novak shirt did you read? Most likely.
Nick Kyrgios sees the world of tennis differently. He sees his job differently, and he takes that opportunity to do what he enjoys. He doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to do, and he says what is on his mind.
The sheer honesty (whether we want it or not), is he is a breath of fresh air in press conferences.
Whether you like him or not, I bet you’re wondering what his next move will be, and you’ll wait like the rest of us for the next match, the next headline, and the next video.
